In an effort to foster social cohesion and highlight the value of those facing serious mental illness, we present a unique initiative in the Getxo community. This is the “Shared Christmas Meal”, an event aimed at those with weak family coverage or in a situation of loneliness during the holidays. This proposal not only offers a festive banquet, but also promotes the active participation of Argia Fundazioa’s users as organizers and hosts, thus facilitating the expansion of their social networks, the strengthening of their empowerment and their social integration.
At Argia Fundazioa we meet the social demand of accompanying people with severe mental disorders and their affective environment to improve their public image and quality of life.
In 2023, a voluntary proposal inspired by this issue merges with a similar initiative of the Miranda Foundation in Barakaldo, aimed at the elderly. This union, supported by the Getxo City Council and local social entities, gives rise to a collaborative celebration that seeks to counteract exclusion and loneliness during the Christmas holidays.
For two weeks, we mobilized diverse resources for funding, volunteers and a diverse offer of cultural and entertainment activities. We work in close coordination with social entities, social workers and the active aging area of the city council to identify those who could benefit from this initiative. The result was the participation of 95 people, with the contribution of 3 recreational workshops, 3 cultural performances and the support of 20 volunteers.
This year, our goal is to repeat and expand this experience, giving 100 lonely people the opportunity to celebrate Christmas collectively. The Christmas lunch, accompanied by performances and workshops, was held at the Argia Fundazioa headquarters in Algorta, reaffirming our commitment to inclusion and community welfare.
In the midst of joy and Christmas spirit, our initiative seeks not only to nourish bodies, but also hearts, creating bonds of solidarity and mutual support in the Getxo community. Together, we demonstrate that the true magic of Christmas lies in sharing and caring for others.
